When Britain Went Pop
300 page survey of early British pop art from an exhibition in 2013 (by the creepy-sounding “Christie’s Private Sales”). Satisfying 11x11 inch softcover format and good reproductions. Peter Blake dominates by a furlong or so, with lots of Paolozzi, Phillips, Hockney, Kitaj, Allen Jones—and some others I was less familiar with like Colin Self and Jann Haworth. Everyone seems to be building huge canvases and sculptures, then divvying them up into these coffers and going to work filling the spaces with wrappers, toys, scraps, uncanny takes on basic shapes and primary colors. But especially with Blake and Phillips and Tilson, the hoard is filtered through a formalist sorting method - everything is in its right place in the lattice. Occasional male nudes by Hockney and Boshier break up the monotony of the obsession with lad-mag girls and starlets.
