Ronald Searle - Secret Sketchbook
1970 book of the English illustrator's drawings from "the back streets of Hamburg." Searle doesn't always get my blood pumping, but this is wobbling reportage full of human life. Its heart is clearly in the red light district but there are bits of cabarets, cafes, signage, and street scenes. One spread shows a sketch of a man being carried off on a stretcher in front of a store sign reading EROTIK BUCHER. Kind of Grosz-like sets of bodies strutting around. Copy itself is a little worn but it feels right for the 'secret sketchbook' concept - it really attracts no attention on a shelf.
