Konrad Klapheck

$35.00

Hardcover catalog (issued without dust jacket) from 1992 of the German painter Konrad Klapheck. Paintings from 1958 all the way through early 90s, in a barely-changing hard edged style.

He specializes in what feels to me like a kind of true abstraction: taking a form and redescribing it so oddly that you almost don’t recognize it. Meanwhile an ominous, uncanny overtone is at work. What is this weightless space these machines are populating? A painting of a tire will have a title like Die Macht des Vergessens (The Power of Oblivion). A drill press: Die Supermutter (The Supermother). Trippiness through sheer force of banal.

About 70 pages, mostly color, in an LP-sized 12x12” format. The cover fabric has some charming blotches but it’s a strong copy. I’m always amazed by the quality of the reproductions in this.
