Brian Chippendale - Maggots

This book's vitals are bit odd when you add them up. It's 4 inches high and over 300 pages. It's softcover but it has a dust jacket AND a ribbon placemarker sewn into the binding. This item emerged from a dream.

On the cover we have bilateral symmetry: on the inside we are dragged into the zig-zag (readers are instructed on the inside flap to 'read like a snake'). Meaning you alternate reading the coffered panels rightwards and leftwards. Back and forth, for 350 pages - the effect is yogic and trippy.

I remember going to a signing for Chippendale's book Puke Force whenever that came out, and during the Q&A someone asked him if he ever did psychedelic drugs. His response was something like: "I dont—but if that's what it takes you to keep up..." I can't make it any clearer: the comic is the drug. And like an acid trip, the only way out is through.

Maggots is an insane, inhuman book from a permanently altered mind. The drawings feel like looking you're looking through a compound eye, or Muybridge sequences of the dreams of a box of action figures.
